The Internet is a great resource, but you need to search for a job in other places as well. Social networking sites can sometimes help, but the best approach is to research companies of interest, find out if they have any available positions and get your resume out there for people to see.

Update your resume. You should always keep your resume current, even when you are not on the hunt for a job. You never know when an opportunity may present itself, so have a copy of your resume ready and available. It will also be easier to keep track of previous employment when you don't have to track down each bit of info as you need it.

When you are creating a resume, try to include some of the key words that the Job Recruiters you are applying to is looking for. Sometimes, companies will weed out resumes based on these words, as it is a very easy way to get the call for an interview through your resume.

Do not get too friendly with bosses or coworkers. It is your best interest to keep your relationships at work on a professional level. When you have friendly and personal relationships at work, you can introduce confilicts that are not work related into the workplace. You want to steer clear of disaster so you don't risk your company position.

Do not waste any time applying for jobs that are not really on the list of your preferred positions. While you may end up getting one of these jobs, you will not be happy with it since that is not really where you want to be. The more you love your job, the more likely you are to be better at it.

If you're asked to fill in an application, make sure you're thorough. You are probably providing the same information on the resume you submitted, but making sure you provide a neat, hand-written application proves that you can follow directions and pay attention to details.

Do what you are told to do as quickly and well as you can. Anytime that you are charged with a special task it is an opportunity to show off your skills and please your boss. Do those tasks first, of course, without neglecting you regular responsibilities. Show your boss that you manage your work load well.

When looking for a job try to find one that fits your personality type. For example, if you are shy and like working on projects alone, a job that requires you to be part of, and contribute to a larger team may be a bad choice. Carefully assess who you are, and find a job that fits that perfectly.

Don't lie on your resume about your skill sets. You may feel like you need to stretch the truth to open doors, but more often than not your lack of the skills, in reality, will be found out pretty easily by a savvy interviewer. Instead, teach yourself the skills you need to know to make you more attractive to hiring companies.

Use an employment agency. They will help reduce the stress of job searching and make things clear for you. The agency will take a look at the skills you possess and help match you to potential employers. Stay in touch with your employment agency to find out about new job opportunities.

When submitting a resume, you need to think about how to cover any gaps in employment. Gaps in employment, for whatever reason, can be viewed as a negative mark against your employment history. If they are long gaps, show how you have kept up to date within your industry. If they are shorter, explain any reasons for these gaps so they are not perceived in a negative light.

As was mentioned in the beginning of this article, the current employment environment is very bleak. In order to beat the odds and survive through these difficult times you must be willing to educate yourself. Take advantage of all the great tips and advice you've read about and apply it. Good luck!

Send a thank you letter. A lot of people don't do this, so if you use this one tip, you may put yourself ahead of the pack very quickly. Simply write a short letter thanking the person for their time, reiterating that you want the job, and reminding him or her of your unique qualifications.

Network, network, network! When looking for a Job Recruiters use all of your resources, including both business and personal contacts. Connect with anyone that is in the field you are in and use resources like LinkedIn to find other contacts, too. Submitting your resume and application via an inside track gives you an edge over the many people who submit via the standard practice.

Learn how to write an effective resume for your specific industry. Recruiters see many resumes everyday. If you can make your resume stand out, it will give you a better chance of landing an interview. Check out books from the library, or search for resume tips online. The time spent in perfecting your resume will be well worth it.

Get help. There are numerous free or low cost services available that can help you obtain everything from career advice to resume writing. A good place to start your search for these services is your local library and Department of Labor. Look for applicable classes and workshops and sign up!
